FLORIDA ELECTIONS COMMISSION

About Us

The Florida Elections Commission (FEC) is the administrative agency charged with enforcing Chapters 104 and 106, Florida Statutes, which fall under the Florida Election Code. The agency is composed of nine appointed Commissioners who serve as agency head, and its Executive Director that manages the day-to-day activities of the agency, which includes legal, investigative, and administrative staff. The agency is administratively housed within the Department of Legal Affairs; however, it is a separate budget entity, not subject to the control, supervision or direction of the Attorney General's Office.

The purpose of the FEC is to ensure transparency in Florida's elections; its primary responsibility is regulating campaign finance and reporting. The Commission adjudicates cases alleging violations of Chapters 104 and 106, and is authorized by Chapter 106 to impose civil penalties of up to $2,500 per violation. The Commission also considers appeals of automatic fines issued by election filing officers when a candidate or political committee fails to file its campaign treasurer's reports on time.

The FEC has no authority over the actual conduct of elections, voter security, or candidate qualifying. Questions regarding those issues may be directed to the Florida Department of State Division of Elections or your local Supervisor of Elections Office. Requests for advisory opinions fall under the authority of the Division of Elections, pursuant to Section 106.23, Florida Statutes.
